In the corporate world, employees can easily be classified as numbers, constantly grouped together in every setting. However, those who stick out and impress senior-level management always have the upper hand when it comes to promotions, perks, and connecting on a more personal level with both the job and the company.
So, in the spirit of being kick ass employees & Girlbosses, here are a few tips and tricks to standing out and impressing your boss.
1. Do everything, and I mean everything, with a smile.
Don’t even let your boss think for a second that you aren’t happy to be there. The tasks may be trivial, you may feel like you’re better than them, but it’s about paying your dues, and your boss will take note when you constantly have a positive attitude.
2. Offer to stay late.
I don’t care if you have set hours, before you leave, always offer to stay for anything that your team needs you to do. It will pay off.
3. If you’re ever bored, ask for more things to do.
It may be nice to sit around and listen to music on your computer, but when you’re constantly goofing around checking Facebook, people notice. Ask your manager if he or she needs help with anything, I guarantee there’s probably something that needs to be done, and someone that will appreciate your effort.
4. Get to know people all across the company.
Don’t just stay in your cubicle all day. Take a walk, and meet people! Go to meetings, introduce yourself, connect over email etc.. If there is ever a question of whether or not you’re eligible for a promotion, you want more hands raised for you. This can only happen if you know more people.
5. Be vocal.
Don’t be obnoxious, but speak up! Senior talent appreciates your opinion as long as it is well informed and add value.
Chin up, you won’t be making copies and going on coffee runs forever. But if you act like it’s the most important thing in the world now, it really does set you apart from tons of other people who act like they are better than the tasks that they are given. It’s all about working your way up, and doing it with a positive attitude.
